Emu

“There’s an emu in the Milky Way and two bright stars, and as the stars get brighter during the month of May, the emu’s neck stretches and that’s when you know there’s a lot of emu eggs around”

The Djab wurrung and Jardwadjali knew that when Canopus the Dog Star rose above the horizon in early spring it was time to search for emu eggs, which were considered a particular delicacy.

  3. Thank you, Heather, now I see it, and them, the emus. Fascinating creatures. We have nothing like that here.

  4. Love this. Just love it.

  5. Wow, and I’m thrilled to watch squirrels and blue jays. Australia has such cool wildlife.

  6. I’ve always loved stories- any story that connects to Sirius- and lucky for us all there are more stories about Sirius then anything else in the sky…wait. I think the Sun has more.

    But still.

This is a great one for me to learn.

  7. (: Those emus are really tricky birds – i love them from a distance but they always kind of frighten me like stampeding elephants would… *grin*- great little reflection here Heather.

  8. Emus are such fascinating birds. They always look rather gangly. However, I shall never forget when my husband had just cooked his succulent steak on the bbq, when an emu had stealthily crept up behind him and plucked it away. With one gulp, it was digested. Much to my husband’s horror and appetite!! We were at Tower Hill reserve near Koroit.
